For the Ocean

Being on the water makes you appreciate the ocean and the wildlife. An opportunity to see serine places and animals in their natural habitat was one of the main reasons that attracted me to sailing. Having a pod of dolphins swimming with the boat or a whale breaching brings me joy.

However, despite its vastness, the ocean is not immune to human impact. Plastic waste is overtaking it and has entered every level of the food chain. Habitat destruction due to climate change, rising sea temperatures, and overfishing threaten marine wildlife. To help mitigate these issues and protect nature for the other generations to see, Backstay contributes 1 percent of profit to the not-for-profit organizations. Please see a list of the ones we support below. If you want to support any of them, please visit their websites and consider additional ways to contribute to the protection of our nature.

    ORGANIZATIONS WE SUPPORT

    The Ocean Cleanup

The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and scaling technologies to rid the oceans of plastic. Founded in 2013, it focuses on cleaning up existing plastic pollution and intercepting plastic in rivers before it reaches the ocean. The Ocean Cleanup aims to remove 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040 through innovative cleanup systems deployed in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and other polluted areas worldwide.

    Oceana

Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated to ocean conservation. Founded in 2001, it focuses on science-based policy changes to protect marine ecosystems and wildlife. Oceana’s campaigns address issues like overfishing, plastic pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction. The organization operates globally, working with governments, communities, and partners to achieve measurable outcomes that ensure sustainable marine environments for future generations.

    Ocean Conservancy

Ocean Conservancy works to protect the ocean from global challenges through science-based solutions. They engage in initiatives like combating ocean plastic pollution, promoting sustainable fisheries, protecting marine wildlife, and tackling climate change impacts. The organization also involves volunteers and advocates in cleanup events, policy advocacy, and educational campaigns to support marine conservation efforts.

    The Marine Mammal Center

The Marine Mammal Center advances global ocean conservation through rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals, scientific research, and education. They rescue and treat injured, sick, and orphaned marine mammals, conduct research on marine health and ocean conservation issues, and educate the public about marine ecosystems. The Center’s work aims to ensure the health and sustainability of marine life and ecosystems.

    Coral Reef Alliance

The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) is dedicated to saving the world’s coral reefs through science-based solutions and community partnerships. They focus on improving water quality, promoting sustainable fisheries, and protecting reef habitats. CORAL engages local communities, regional networks, and global initiatives to address the impacts of climate change and other threats to coral reefs, ensuring their health and resilience for future generations.
